Speaking of the Storm

I watched the aftermath of Katrina
like everyone else in this country—
in awe, ignorance, and from afar.

Maybe not.
Maybe I saw slightly more,
because I saw a population defined by much more
than the color of their skin
that sent the troubled waters
to swallow their doors.

But we learn through education—
something this country still resists.

In a place that celebrates:
“Just show me your tits.”
It’s not even local.
Whose influence was this?
Somebody really had done take a piss.

There were no drums, no time to run.

You tell me—did they do this for fun?

I watched Katrina like everyone else,
