America, a Nation of Addicts

America is a nation of addicts
No one is excluded, myself included

Everyone is in a different phase
Trying to make it through it
Most are in complete denial
Unaware of the cause of all their trials.
Others out roaming aisles, long ago they lost their smiles

The largest of us consume it all, while we celebrate children degrading themselves in dorm halls.
Tech devices are our only suffices; children strung out on Adderall, chained to iPad vices.

Addicted to crime, addicted to the dime, addicted to what’s mine.
Everyone fighting to shine while they’re lost, dead, or crying inside.
Addicted to thoughts and prayers online.
America is a nation of addicts by design.

Prescription pills and theme park thrills.

Leave us alone, this shit bores us, threatens to the core of us,

making the wine mean so much more to us —

Video games keeping us from feeling shame.
The kids can’t read; they are hopped up on speed.
When really the pulpit is the culprit.

Addicted to healing, addicted to avoiding feeling.
Just ask the pharmacists about Congress’s scripts; it means they are cooked, and we all let it go overlooked.
Just keep playing by the book.

Society is crashing, personalities clashing.
Everyone dedicated to pretending that this really isn’t the ending.
Pretend it’s fine that we still have time.
Pretend it was sudden, like it wasn’t happening the whole damn time.
